ROMANCING ROME : TOP 4 ROMANTIC SPOTS TO VISIT IN ROME

One of the most important activities to undertake after exchanging vows is your honeymoon. It is the perfect period to cement your love and reflect on your successful wedding day. The ideal honeymoon spot should have immense romantic places for you and your spouse. One of my favorite romantic cities is Rome in Italy. It was my honeymoon destination after our successful wedding.

The Garden of the Oranges

The Garden of the oranges also known as Giardino Degli Aranci was one of my favorite and most romantic sites in the city. It offers a fragrance of orange blossoms as well as a fantastic view of close to all of Rome’s magnificent monuments and historic architecture. The site is built with beautiful walkways that make the site also known as the Parco Savello a romantic place worth visiting in Rome.  The garden is located behind the magnificent Basilica of Santa Sabina on one side and surrounded by the beautiful ruins of the wall that once surrounded the Savelli Castle. It is also in close proximity to the Circus Maximus, a beautiful garden accessible on foot or via a Segway.  The garden is located in a quiet location with the tranquility, aroma and view of the expansive orange garden. It is a perfect romantic spot to watch the sun set over the horizon in the midst of a historic and beautiful city.

Villa Borghese

This is definitely a romantic spot worth visiting when in Rome. It is dubbed the ‘Central Park’ of Rome, and is a favorite for many local and foreign tourists. Villa Borghese is the third largest public park in Rome covering 197.7 acres. They were developed for the Villa Borghese Pinciana and designed by a renowned architect Flaminio Ponzio for Scipione Borghese, who used it as a party villa and a house for his art collection. The gardens were remodeled early nineteenth century.  The gardens provide one of the most romantic environments in the city be it a romantic walk, conversation area, outdoor art gallery or even picnic. The garden contains beautiful landscape filled with huge beautiful trees, many statues, hidden little fountains and a big pond. Villa Borghese is also famous for its historical buildings, world-class museums like Galleria Borghese (where most of Scipione Borghese’s works is housed), a children’s cinema, as well as a bike and boat rental area.   The gardens also have a replica of the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre built in 2003, Exposition’s Zoo, and numerous award winning historical villas, all that make the place worth visiting when in the city. It is boarded to the south by the Pincian Hill of ancient Rome, which is one of the best sites in the city. The gardens are accessible by boarding bus number 495, 490, 88, or the metro Flaminio.

Pincio Gardens

Linked to the Villa Borghese via a pedestrian bridge, the Pincio Gardens are another perfect destination for your honeymoon. The gardens offer a peaceful and cozy environment for all manner of activities. I ancient Rome, the garden hill was not recognized as one of the Seven Hills of Rome and was located outside the original boundaries of the ancient city of Rome. It however lay within the wall built between 270 and 273AD by Roman Emperor Aurelian.  The modern look of the gardens were laid out between 1809 and 1814 by Giuseppe Valadier. It comprises of numerous romantic spots and activities that are ideal for any couple on their honeymoon. It offers one of the best views of the city of Rome and is surrounded by numerous monuments and historic architecture.   The gardens have hire services for bicycles, carriages and segways for an afternoon of activities for both you and your spouse. The gardens also comprises cafes and eating spots for you to catch a bite. It is complemented by a small lake at the middle of the gardens surrounded by many benches making it an ideal place for conversations, quality time with your spouse and also an afternoon picnic. It nears the Borghese gardens which are accessible by a mini stream train.

Trevi Fountain

Located in the Trevi district in Rome, the Trevi fountain is unarguably one of the most visited romantic places in the city. It is a magnificent building Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci two renowned Italian architects. It is one the largest fountains in Rome and one of the most famous fountains in the world and has featured in many movies. The fountain stands 86 ft high and 161.3 ft wide. The area where it is located was first discovered in the 19th C BC as a pure water source that served the city. It was first refurbished in 1629 during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, and completed in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini and officially opened and inaugurated on May 22 by Pope Clement XIII. It was then refurbished in January 2013 for period of 20-months at a whopping 2.2-million-euro cost.  The fountain is known world-wide for coin-throwing, tradition started long ago by soldiers as a promise to return to the city in future. Coins are supposed to be thrown using the right hand over the left shoulder. So far an estimated US $1.5 million worth of coins has been thrown with an estimated 3,000 Euros being thrown every single day. The money is used to support a supermarket for the needy in the city.   There’s also a miniature fountain on the left side where couples who purportedly drink from the fountain stay together forever. For any couple who visits Rome the Trevi Fountain is a must visit.
